Managing the global supply chain: Knowledge development and tools for strategic decisions (new).

Summary

With the access to a global set of production locations, the geographical configuration of a company’s supply chain becomes a key factor of operational performance. The aim of this project is to enhance the ability of supply managers to effectively exploit the resulting opportunities of production network configuration on a global scale.

Objectives

An improved understanding of the linkages between (a) production network location, (b) organisation ('make', 'co-operate' vs. 'buy'), and (c) performance (in terms of end-product cost, quality and availability).

The identification of best practice in the planning and implementation of changes in network configuration.

The development of a methodology for production network planning (permitting a greater use of software-based decision support tools).

Comparative analysis of emerging economies as locations for global production and sourcing (on-going)

Summary Following reductions in distance and 'border-crossing' costs, companies have access to a more diverse set of production locations. The aim of this project is to support the choice of production location by providing the tools needed ― a methodology and information resources ― for comparative analyses of emerging economies in this regard.
Objectives

The development of an integrated set of indicators, measuring the potential and performance of emerging economies as locations for international production.

The development of an inventory of comparative data on international production in emerging economies.
